This Sunday, 7 October, 2012, is the 60th anniversary of the barcode patent, filed in the US in 1952. When they were first introduced, some wine manufacturers refused to incorporate barcodes onto their labels for aesthetic reasons. Now they are used not just for their function, but for their aesthetic meaning. You may have even seen them used as body art, with US singer Pink among those who sport a barcode tattoo. The US artist Scott Blake is famous for his barcode artworks. He has explored the use of QR codes too, linking the viewer to a full multimedia experience.
